Huge Sale at Quilt Baby

I thought I'd give you guys a heads up that my BFF Jess is having a huge sale over at the Quilt Baby Etsy shop starting at midnight tonight. Yes, I just said BFF...what?

Here's a sneeky little peek at some of the things that will be sold off at a deep discount to make room for some gorgeous new things on the regular Quilt Baby site in late summer.

Tonight's Stocking

It seems like there is going to be a lot of stalking tonight at Necessitae, so I decided to stagger my listings in hopes that it might keep Hyena Cart from crashing. The Rock-n-Roll coaster sets will go live at 9PM, the Blues Inspired Monster Booty longies at 9:10 and the Classical Monster Booty longies at 9:30. While you are waiting for your item to go live, take a few minutes and poke around at all the other awesome things around HC tonight! You can shop using the daily calendar or look here to see every single item going live today. I also know that moxy is having her grand opening tonight, so make sure you swing by and check her out! I am going to be waiting not-so=patiently for her to stock this amazing gnome messenger bag. Back off kids, that sucker's mine!

Correction...

There has been a change in the line up and the Baa Baa Black Sheep set with Hibiscus Baby will be auctioned at my regular Hyena Cart shop here on August 1. I will still be stocking a few other items-all Buy It Now- with Necessitae on the 30th.

Baaaaa! and Le Petit Grrr!

Here is a sneak peek at the Baa Baa Black Sheep skirty set I am stocking on my Hyena Cart shop on the first. Joline from Hibiscus Baby whipped up the shirt for me. How awesome is she?

I will be stocking some other things there as well, so make sure you stop by.

I also finished little Amaya's Princess Monster longies and they went out this morning:

The shipment of Classic Crankys is sitting at customs in Lima and they hope to have it stateside by the end of the week. Stay tuned...

A Whole Day!

Our friends Bill and Kelly and their three boys just swung by and picked up Henry and Kyle for a day out on the lake in their boat. This means I have the whole house all to myself for a whole day. Along with a whole bunch of work, I am going to take a ride down to the Penland auction house to see what kind of things are going to be in tonight's auction. This house is pretty well furnished at this point (minus a dresser for Kyle in the bedroom) but it needs some quirky little what nots here and there. A good country auction is just the place to find accents for this strange old house.

Meg's custom monsters went into the mail yesterday and I really love how they came out.

I also managed to finally upload a couple of pictures of last weekend. We went to Henry's friend Hana's birthday party and her mom made the most amazing unicorn cake.

We also discovered a bird nest in the fern hanging on our front porch. We knew something was going on in there so we took a peek and sure enough there are 4 little baby birdies in there. I unhooked it and took it down so Henry could catch a glimpse and snapped a super quick picture (it's a bit blurry because I was trying to be as unobtrusive and speedy as possible) of the little darlings.

Alright! Off to take advantage of this empty house!

The Jade Plant Nook

Things are super stressful around here with the custom month coming to a close, a new round of pre-orders coming in and... entering the third month of summer "vacation". We have a little nook at the bottom of the stairs where a huge Jade plant sits and it always looks so peaceful and calm. Be the Jade plant, people.

My Biggest Fan.

While tucking Henry into bed last night:

Henry: Will you lay with me for one minute?
Me: Of course. Maybe even more than one minute.
Henry: You don't want to go work.
Me: Nope. I don't.
Henry: But you have to. 'Cause it's your thing.
Me: It's "my thing"?
Henry: Yeah. You have to work because everyone loooves Crankypants.
Me: Really?
Henry: Yeah.
Me: Do you love Crankypants?
Henry: No. I told you before. All I love is Star Wars.

Crankypants Shtuff...

I spoke to my Peruvian contact and, once again, things are running behind. It seems that this is getting to be par for the course, so a 60 day lead time may be more reasonable when I take pre-orders from now on. The box is supposed to ship from Lima on Friday, so hopefully I can have them and start getting them out the following Friday/Saturday.

In the meantime I've finished a couple of customs:

I've also been working on some tids and bits for my super special guest stocking with Necessitae at the end of the month. I'll start posting pictures and reminding you when it gets a little bit closer.

The Wii had to take a week long vacation because of poor Wiitiquette on the part of my little beast, but it was set back up this morning so I am going to log in later to see if anyone has stepped up to my Guitar Hero challenge. Since the Wii has been in the closet for 7 days, I'll be nice and rusty- here's your chance! Take it now before I practice and get all awesome again...

Twitter

Hey, look over there. Over there to the left, right below "Crankypants Info" and above "What We're Reading". It's the new twitter function I just stuck in there. Aren't I fancy?

Twitter is a little doohicky you can use to make quick updates from your phone or wherever and they automatically show up on the sidebar over there. So next time I am in the middle of Target and Henry does something impossible I can let you know IMMEDIATELY. Isn't technology awesome?

Anyone else out there Twitter? I don't have any Twitter friends or "followers" and it is making me feel like the dorky kid sitting by myself in the cafeteria staring forlornly into my pudding cup...

A Note From Meryl

About the "Entertain JP" contest:

"Wow. You are all amazing.

JP & I read every one of your offerings and could not have ever chosen just one of them. If ever, anywhere, anybody needs to stay busy for a while, I will surely send them to the blog.

Believe it or not, JP has already read Rotary-Wing Aerodynamics (yes he can be quite the geek) and he is very adept at origami. He likes to fold miniature cranes out of gum wrappers and leave them in odd places, like the tube at the bank drive-thru (very Bladerunner). And we got a kick out of the straw-tensegrity – JP actually met Buckminster Fuller when he was a very wee beastie (Bucky was a friend of JP’s dad). All in all, a fine group of entries.

The truth is, JP is the perfect patient: He rests quietly 18 hours a day, does what he is told and doesn’t whine. (oh, heck, that makes him the perfect man) I have been keeping myself amused doing little evil deeds, like ripping open the gift baskets to get to the chocolate before JP has a chance to see them all prettified.

Thank you all for making his recovery a little bit fun!!

Meryl"

Picture Pages.

Some folks (okay, just my mom) have been asking for pictures of the new house, but we don't have a lens wide enough to really get good shots, so I thought I'd at least get a few details for you.

These are the new cafe curtains I made for my office. The bottom panel is "Knit Pirate" by Michael Miller. So. Cool. I think you have to click on it to enlarge it enough to see the print.

I ahabeen trying to figure out what these red flowers are lining our driveway. They attract hummingbirds, which has been amazing.

The front porch:

Relaxation at it's southern finest:

Today Henry's friend Hana came over and they have been having a blast. Kyle took them hiking and then they came home and ran through the sprinkler.

All the fuzzy little bunnies in the world can't out-cute those two.

I also finished Jess's Rainbow Monsters.

I know I have a few local readers, so I also wanted to mention that I just joined up to be a contributing blogger over at Blog Asheville. If you want to read about my take on the haps in Asheville now and again, pop over and check it out or add it to your bloglines/feedburner/etc.

And the Winner is...

I know I'm 2 days late on announcing the winner of the "Entertain JP" contest. Oops.

The winner wrote:

"As a mommy that's been on bedrest a couple of times I have some experience with this. Taking a clue from JP's past and interests I had a few thoughts...

1. Buy him a nose flute and have him start practicing for a duet w/ Henry and his slide whistle. Perhaps a rousing rendition of "Send in the Clowns?" :)

2. Put together a circus movie night extravaganza for him w/ some of the best circus movies of all time (The Marx Brothers at the Circus, Trapeze, The Great Wallendas, The Greatest Show on Earth and Circus World). Don't forget the peanuts, popcorn, soda and of course CIRCUS peanuts!

3. Perhaps JP can use this time to come up w/ a new circus act that can be performed from bed??? Finger unicycling?? Maybe a magic trick or two? This is where his creativity and smarty-pantsness comes in handy as I have no idea what this would be. :) On a more serious note bring him a journal - this could be a time of reflection. No doubt he could turn this into a valuable lesson to be shared w/ the kids he connects with. I know I had some important think time and re-prioritizing on my bedrest. OR, how about a polaroid? Are those still around? A photo/day. Tell his story through pictures? I like this idea.
He can only take 1 photo/day so he has to be strategic about it.

Bonus idea for Meryl: Have her contact a bunch of the groups of kids and other friends/family and organize a mass mailing of cards, letters, art to be delivered to him all at once or a few/day throughout his recovery. Sure to be an encouragement as he moves through his recovery.

Hope you like the ideas - get well soon JP!!!

Mae"

I couldn't pass up the mental picture of JP finger unicycling. And I'm one of approximately 3 people on the planet who love circus peanuts, so there you go. Congrats, I'll email you soon.

In good news, I've heard tell that JP is home and finally able to at least open his laptop again. Next stop- trapeeze!

Books.

You might notice that the book we're reading in the sidebar over there to the left has changed. We actually never made it all the way through Stuart Little. When I started it I didn't remember Stuart being such a stuffy little thing and I was honestly relieved when Henry grew bored of it and wanted to go back to "stories" and lay off the chapter books for a while. It has been a few weeks and we were ready to get back to it, so last night we found the copy of The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks that my mom sent Henry and dug in to the first chapter. So far, so good. Some of the vocabulary is above Henry's level so we are having fun stopping and talking about new words, but the story is interesting enough to keep his attention through the stops and starts.

Henry did get a few new books for his birthday. My favorite "story" that he got was Hepcat by William Brandhall. It is about a hipster cat who has lost his "groove" because of nerves before a big concert. He gets a tip from four "beatles" rocking out under the stage's floorboards and goes on a musical journey to get his groove back before the big performance. We love it.

He also got Matthew Reinhart's Star Wars: A Pop Up Guide to the Galaxy, which is absolutely amazing. The language is way over Henry's head (and mine, once they get into all the details of the Star Wars universe) but he has spent hours pouring over the pictures and pop ups, which are just INSANE! I don't want to ruin the "ahhhhhh" moment for any of you who might also have little Star Wars freaks and might buy the book, but I had to throw a picture on of the very first page.

Each page has a main pop up in the middle and then several flaps along the sides of smaller characters, planets, and ships that also contain smaller pop ups. The whole thing is crazy amazing and I think it is one of those books that will keep his interest for a long, long time.

Fluff

Finally! Some new Cranky pictures to post!

The first July custom is done! These little guys will be out in tomorrow's mail:

A friend and amazing photographer, Rebecca from Catchlights NW is local to Olympia, WA and is going to do a Crankified photo shoot with Kimya and Panda Dawson later on this summer. These one of a kind longies for Panda were knit using organic merino wool hand dyed by Hillary of Dashing Dachs in her amazing "Guppy" colorway with a contrasting semi-solid in "Kelp Green". It knit up like buttah, and if you can manage to get your needles on some, I would highly recommend it.

This afternoon my best bud and sister in craftiness, Jess from Quit Baby, get to ditch the husbands and kids and run off to check out The Big Crafty over at The Grey Eagle in the River Arts district of Asheville. I have been whining about the lack of local indie craft shows for months and months so I did a little jig when I saw the flyer for this at Orbit video the other day. I recognize some of the crafters' names from their Etsy stores so I can't WAIT to check it out.

Bring It On.

My Wii number is 180538555644.

You have to add me as a friend on your Wii and then let me know when you want to rock.

Friday, July 11, 2008

Let's Rock.

In celebration of reaching the next difficulty level on Guitar Hero I thought it might be fun to challenge the world at large to a GUITAR BATTLE dun-dun-dun. If you have Guitar Hero on Wii and want to challenge me to a battle, leave a comment or shoot me an email at crankypantsknits@gmail.com and we'll set it up.

I'll send a super awesome Crankypants sticker to anyone who rocks harder than I.

The Economy is Like...Woah.

Well, it's happened. The state of the economy has hit me.

I have spoken to my Peruvian contact and, due to the 30% drop in the value of the dollar in relation to Peruvian Nuevo Sol, he has had to raise the price I pay for each pair of longies knit in the cooperative in order to pay the women a living wage. This means that I will be raising the price of Classic Crankypants to $80 a pair, up from $70. Even though this is the first time I've raise prices in quite a while, it hurts a bit to do so. I've said in the past that I will keep the price at $70 for those of you on the wait list and I will honor that, but anyone who adds their name from this point on will be charged the new price. I am having the price changed on the website right now to reflect this so that no one is misled.

The Mystery of the Hiking Relative

That's what I'd call it if it were a Nancy Drew book, but it's really just a silly little mystery I need help solving.

Someone posted on a message board that her mom went hiking with a relative of mine in the recent past and they chatted about knitting. Her mom doesn't really remember the details and I can't for the life of me think of who this person could be. The hike was in NH, some sort of group hike thing. The poster said her mom and this 'relative' talked about knitting and she had all the inside scoop about Crankys. My mom thought it might be a friend of hers from work, but the name didn't ring any bells with the poster's mama. This person said about her mom: "She keeps saying Heather -- lives in NH, teaches college, has two little ones, one named Gracie." I seriously can't place it.

Heather! If you're out there! Tell me who you are!

Happy Birthday, M'dear.

Today is my tiny man's 5th birthday. I can hardly believe it. I was going to post a few pictures of him from the past few years superquick but I got sucked right into Picassa and sat here watching him grow up on film (well, the digital equivalent) for the past hour or so.

Darlin'- even though as I type this you are throwing a holy fit because Daddy made you turn off the Wii- I love you more than anything from this here planet to a galaxy far, far away. Your Pepere once told me that all of the things that drove him crazy when I was your age are the character traits that he admires in me now, and I can see the same thing happening with you. You learned a new word yesterday-tenacious- and that is you. As you put it "Because I say please and please and please no matter how many times you say 'no', and I don't give up. I'm tenacious. Me and my Daddy both". You are the most stubborn, frustrating, wonderful person and I love being your mother.

Happy Birthday, baby.

Cuz...

My loverly sister in law just posted these pictures from our visit to VT earlier this month on her blog so I decided to blatently steal them. My dear old dad has a disk of photos I took out there that is supposed to be in the mail eventually, but who knows.

Sam and Henry bonding over Super Why:

Sam scootching a liiiiittle bit closer:

All the toys in that place and they played with a sheet for 3 hours...

The Eagle Has Landed

The long awaited box did indeed arrive yesterday, so the first shipment of Classic Crankys from that pre-order will go out this afternoon. I did invoicing last night, so please get those balances in asap so I can ship 'em on out to you. Here are the early birds:

I am desperately seeking Kate J. who has dutifully paid her deposit and waited ever so patiently, but now the email I have keeps bouncing back and I can't get through. KATE! Email me! I have your pants sitting here and they keep looking up at me with these big eyes asking when they can go home.

When you guys start receiving your Classic Crankys you will notice something a little different about them:

Can you spot it? Fancy, huh?

I also got a couple of bolts of this amazing Michael Miller fabric in to make seat cushions and curtains for the office. I was dinking around and made a few coasters for myself since I keep getting chastised for leaving water rings on the computer desk. I promptly fell in love with them and am thinking about stocking a couple of sets for those of you who are as geeky about crafting as I am.

Okay, I am off. I need to get dressed so Henry and I can go play with Jess and Noah and deliver the samples to my prospective sewing rescue team.

The "Entertain JP" Contest Extravaganza!

While we were away on vacation we were horrified to learn that our friend JP (I JUST talked about him on here a few posts ago) was doing some work on a tall ladder on his house, was surprised by some bees flying out of a gutter and fell 23 feet or so to the ground below. He was airlifted to a local hospital and, though he suffered multiple injuries including broken ribs and vertebrea and a collapsed lung, it looks like he will make a full recovery. This is amazing news, but I fear that poor JP is going to be stuck in bed a while to give his bones and things a chance to heal.

I have a few ideas rattling around in my head, but I thought it would be fun to have a little contest to entertain JP while he's recovering. Leave a comment on this post telling me 3 or more things you can do to pass the time while stuck in bed. I know some of you mamas who have experienced bed rest during pregnancy are going to do me proud here. Good books, movies, tv shows, games, food...anything you can think of is fair game, just try to make it entertaining. JP is a super smarty pants, but he doesn't take himself too seriously. Hints for Meryl, who I'm assuming is going to be JP's beck and call girl during the recoup might be good, too.

I'll keep it open for a week, and next Tuesday noonish I'll choose my favorite entry. The winner will get a pair of Classic Crankys of their choice from the NEXT shipment (hopefully here by month's end). Feel free to enter as many times as you can come up with 3 good things. Making us giggle is always a plus.

Home Sweet Home

While we all had a wonderful time in northern Michigan for the past 10 days, I have to say that I am way beyond thrilled to be home. We left Indian River at about 6:45 yesterday morning and (with a stop at Ikea in Ohio to break up the day) pushed on through to get home a little after 10 last night. Henry was a champ. I know, we're super lucky to have a little ramblin' man on our hands. We went out to breakfast this morning and now Henry is upstairs playing Wii for a bit while Kyle wrestles with a little dresser and chair we got for the bean at Ikea. His clothes have been in their half moved/boxed up state until this point, so I'll be happy to take care of that this afternoon.

Once I figure out how the heck to get all of our vacation pictures transferred from the laptop to the desktop (I hear tell that it isn't as complicated as I think it is, but I'm not up for ti right now) I'll bore you with them. Until then...let's talk business, shall we?

I got the UPS shipping notice from my Peruvian contact in Charlotte on the road yesterday, so I am expecting the big, bad, box 'o goodies this afternoon sometime. I'm going to go ahead and start sending out balance invoices to people in the next little bit to get a jump on things. I'll make a post office run tomorrow afternoon, so let's say that if you get your balance payment in by...2 tomorrow (EST), your classic Crankys will go out with tomorrow's mail. After that will jump to the next day. And just to clarify-these are the folks who pre-ordered roughly 48 days ago.

Also, a tidbit of news for those of you who have been asking about the monster bibs: I am meeting with a local seamstress tomorrow afternoon and giving her samples to see if she can help me meet demand on those as well and get them to be regular old in-stock items in the near future. I am SO thrilled to have the opportunity to have someone local on the job, so cross your fingers that it all works out. Yay for help!!!

The First!!!

I dragged my whole family into town for lunch at a place that is a wi-fi hotspot so I could do the customs list while we were eating. BAD daughter in law!

Anyway, here it is:

Amanda C.
Jessica C.
Samantha E.
Nichole D.

I have access to an actual computer for another 40 minutes or so and then I am back to answering email on my phone. So if you are one of the folks on this list, I am happy to answer any questions and talk design and colors and whatnot on my phone email, but I can't send you color swatches or anything until I get home on the 9th.

We have been out on the lake setting off fireworks and having squirt gun fights and running around like maniacs-nothing could be finer. I hope everyone is well and I'll try to get back into town to update again soon.
