I Wanna Rock!
Sending Henry off to FIRST GRADE (!!!) was almost too easy this morning. I walked him to his classroom, he picked out a locker and put his stuff away and plopped down in his chair and started reading a book about Abe Lincoln. I stood next to him for a minute waiting for... something... but it was pretty clear there would be no gnashing of teeth or tearful clinging to legs. I bent down and said-
Me: Henry, are you cool for me to leave or do you want me to hang out for a while.
Henry: I'm cool, mom.
And that was it.
In my too quiet house that would now stay clean until 2:30 if I could be bothered to clean it, I had time to finish up and photograph these little guys.

While doing this, on this too quiet day, I kept playing a little scene out in my head wherein Henry's teacher comes into the room and says-
Henry's teacher: Henry! What do you want to do with your life?
Henry (leaping up onto his desk): I wanna ROCK!
It makes me giggle, even though in actuality it would play something like this-
Henry's teacher: Henry! What do you want to do with your life?
Henry (staying in his seat because jumping up on anything higher than 6" is 'dangerous' and would undoubtedly make him 'very nervous'): I want to work with NASA to design and launch the first ever satellite comprised entirely of LEGO".
Ah well.

The Final Countdown!
Right out of the gate, let me apologize for getting that song stuck in your head on such a lovely Saturday morning. That was just plain mean.
I'm referring, of course, to the fact that we begin back to school today!!! First grade here we come!!! Exclamation!!!
Technically, today is only meet the teacher day so we'll be home at noon... but I'm counting it. I have had a great time with Henry this summer, but I am so excited to get back to a routine. When I am out of routine I get cranky and things fall through the cracks. No good.
It is a good thing I'll have a routine soon, too, because there are some exciting things happening next month! I just finished my end of a collaboration with the fabulous Lindsay of Ky Baby Knits that I am excited about, and Venus Vanguard is having a month of WEEKLY stockings in September! I am still in the planning stages on most of these, but am really hoping to pull it out and stock at least one item for 3 of the 4 stockings.
September 3rd I'll be stocking something inspired by Alice in the Rose Garden.
September 10th I'll be helping a wee beastie to fit right in at The Wild Rumpus.
September 17th I'll be taking a break as my Venus sisters stock items inspired by Freaky Friday, tackling things outside of their specialty.
September 24th I'll be paying tribute to the amazing John Hughes with a little something Pretty in Pink.
Okay. It is time to tame my own wild beastie. Note to self: do not let a child who has 73 pounds of unruly-on-a-good-day hair go to bed with a wet head the night before Meet the Teacher...

Stormy Day
Wow, are these ever appropriate for the day. It is grey, grey, grey and drizzly out there and it is expected to be like this all day. Ah well. I guess I don't have to worry about dragging the beastie down to the school garden to do our share of weed pulling this morning.
I was told that the Papa of the wee one these are for is quite the weather geek. They wanted a darker spin on my Beautiful Day longies with a tornado and big storm cloud menacing the cityscape.

I also wanted to remind folks that this is the very last day of the Crankypants Back to School sale! Markdowns and free shipping will apply until 10pm EST.

Whackadoodle.
That is what I think I must be. Tuesday morning-"wicked early" Henry says- he and I will get into the little white Rabbit and make the 10.5 hour drive to Philly to spend the night with my old bestie and her two beasties. I haven't seen her in almost 2 years and she has a brand spankin' new little girl, so I can't wait to get there. She has a 2 year old and a 3 week old, though, so I am fully expecting her to fall asleep mid sentence several times. I am looking forward to seeing the expression on her face when I whip out the picture I recently found of us from a decade of Halloweens ago. She was Slash from GnR and I was an undead vampire raver from Hell. Like chocolate and peanut butter, really...
After we spend the night in Philly we are getting back into the Rabbit and driving the last 5 hours to my folks' house in CT where we will spend the week picking blueberries, hiking around and hanging out with my fam. WooHoo! While I can't wait to be there, I would be lying if I said the thought of 15 hours alone in the car with a 6 year old wasn't a tad bit daunting. I have a secret stash of Pokemon cards packed in with the spare tire in case of an emergency, what am I forgetting?
Before we hop in the car I wanted to post pictures of July's last custom. I waited all day for some good light but all I got was grey, grey, grey. It's too bad, too, they are pretty dern cute!

While I will have full internet access while I'm out of town, I (obviously) can't ship orders from 850 miles away. This means that any order received after 4pm tomorrow will be shipped as soon as I get home, sweet home on the 13th.
Holy cow, that is just 12 days before my little man starts FIRST GRADE. *sniffsniff*
